BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST IN THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND

Buffalo Bill's Wild West

(Apparently one should not refer to it as the 'Wild West Show')

When, in the early 1900s (in 1904 I believe) Buffalo Bill Cody brought his Wild West show to Europe one of his stops was here in Glossop where he put on a performance for Lord Howard.

"Buffalo Bill's Wild West" came to Pyegrove Field in Glossop and, according to Mr. Webster, the place where our house stands, our garden and the communal garden of the nearby flats (which were originally for senior citizens like Mr.and Mrs. Webster who lived next door) had been the place where the 'Red Indians' had made their camp.

Mister Webster told me this in the late 1960s, he had been working for Lord Howard at the timeand apparently he had waited upon Buffalo Bill when he stayed at Glossop Hall.

Mr. Webster also regailed us with tales of visiting the Indian's camp that was set out in the shade of the trees, many of which still stand today, one of them just by our garden fence. He told me he had watched as the Indians practiced their horsemanship on Pyegrove Field.

There are a few fields in this area that have laid claim to be Buffalo Bill's Field, but
for my money, this has to be the actual place where Buffalo Bill and his company really did perform their Wild West 'Show' at the invitation of Lord Howard...

after all, it was Lord Howard's field.
