I was thinking about blogging about my diet, I make the odd jokey posting about it on Twitter now and then but the fact is men don’t ‘do’ diets.
What I think I mean is that the process of a diet (or any of this lifestyle stuff) doesn’t impact on the male psyche, so men aren’t psychologically equipped to ‘do' diets.
As I see it women can ‘do’ things like diets, to a woman a diet is a process, perhaps even a long series of processes, that have to be gone through, pain, struggling, denial and reward, virtue and guilt are all thing that make diets enjoyable for women.
Men don’t really work like that, if a man has a diet it is a completely different thing, its not to do with processes its to do with goals. When a man sets his mind to a diet it is a goal oriented excersise, there may be more than one goal, but once the goals are defined, that is the end of it and it takes care of itself.
I’ll give you a few examples, one of my goals was to give up full fat milk, so I drank the last of the gold top milk and now I don’t have it anymore. Another of my goals was that I had to give up snack foods, so I stopped eating potato crisps and chocolate biscuits, so I don’t eat things like potato crisps, chocolate biscuits, cakes, chocolate bars etc. I had the goal of eating more fruit, so I eat fruit instead of all the other crap that I used to be clogging up my arteries with.
I know what I want to achieve and the only thing that is between me and that goal is time, I’m in control of it and so I’ll just wait for it to happen. No pressure, no worries, no problem…
… It’s a man thing.
